Philadelphia Water Works - Open Aire Affairs

The Water Works Restaurant and Lounge, a distinctive family-owned business, has become Philadelphia’s landmark dining and special events destination.

A Brief History of the Philadelphia Water Works (Fairmount Water Works)

In the beginning of the eighteenth century, Philadelphia’s city leaders hired a gifted, young engineer named Frederick Graff to construct one of Philadelphia’s—and the Nation’s—first public water delivery systems. To complete this task, Graff chose to use steam engines to raise water to the reservoir elevated above Faire Mount—where the Philadelphia Museum of Art currently resides.
Back in 1909, the Fairmount Water Works silently closed down.  Over the past century the Fairmount Water Works was modified to accommodate an aquarium and a pool.  It wasn’t until 1976 that the Fairmount Water Works was dubbed a National Historic Landmark.

Throughout the past century the Fairmount Water Works has been a destination of great pride for those who live in the city.  The Fairmount Water Works is truly a visual wonder, as the gardens surrounding the site were the initial trails of what has come to be known as Fairmount Park.  It has been said time and time again that you haven’t truly experienced Philadelphia unless you have seen this spectacle.
